Living Deliberately

Maybe I should have titled this Cooking Deliberately….

Down-to-Earth is doing a home audit this week.  Since we have moved here 2 months ago, we have been in “settling mode” and not really “normal life mode.”  In fact, we are still trying to find out what that “normal life mode” will look like for us here.

So, in an attempt to live more deliberately, I am going to be doing a few things to get back to cooking more delibratately.  I need to do better soaking grains for the next day…. and preparing meals ahead of time.  What I used to do was always think one day ahead.  So, if we are eating breakfast, I soak what I will need for tomorrow’s breakfast…. at dinner, prepare for tomorrow’ dinner, etc.  Good idea, right?

Well, yes…. But I am going to take that one step further.  Now, I am going to go on a 3 day appraoch.  I am going to be eating today, soaking for tomorrow and planning for the next day.  By doing this, I will alway have a rotation going and know what leftovers need to be used up and what I might need to stop and get for a future meal.

I have a simple spiral notebook on my kitchen counter and write down in it the plans for each meal as I get there.  The secret to this working (for me) is that I cannot plan more than 2 days ahead, or else I get overwhelmed and may not even bother looking at my notebook after a few days.  Try it, and let me know if this works for you.  Or, share your successes with us.  I’ll keep you posted on how it works for me, too!
